St. Denis

Companion piece to St. Lucy. Just thought I would reiterate the point.

I did this around Halloween. Some rather more Puritanical Christians I've noticed have a problem with Halloween and don't dress up and get free candy on this day, claiming that it takes the focus off of the next day which is the feast of All Saints (celebrating all the saints :D). And Halloween is the celebration before hand "All Hallows Eve" (referring to the saints). The argument I've heard used is that we should be dressing up as saints, not ghouls and demons and devils and headless horsemen and Disney characters.

And this is my little proof that yes indeed WE SHOULD dress up as saints for Halloween. Because from all the martyrs in the Catholic tradition.... we have a LOT of really nice and gruesome saints to pick from. :D

And this guy is a good headless fellow for the guys to dress up as.

So this guy used to be the patron saint of France until Joan of Arc came along. He was a bishop of Paris in the third century I believe. And he was martyred by.... being beheaded. :D

BUT. After he was dead, he picked up his head and walked about six miles preaching a sermon the whole way while carrying his head in his hands

So this guy deserves some serious props for that. :XD: :D

I used this picture from an illustration of Dante's Inferno as a reference... [link]

St. Denis, ora pro nobis!!!
